New Frontiers
See how Chautauqua County helped shape American history by pushing the western frontier forward.
About Us
Founded in 1883, the Chautauqua County Historical Society is one of the oldest historical organizations in western New York. Our mission is to foster an interest in and knowledge of the history of Chautauqua County through the collection, preservation, and interpretation of objects and archives. Members enjoy quarterly programs, special events, museum exhibits, and a subscription to TimeLines, the CCHS newsletter.
For Researchers
Although the CCHS has online resources that can benefit your research, it might be worth a trip to the McClurg Museum to examine original materials. The museum’s library has a significant collection of books, maps, files, and photos that are available to researchers.
The CCHS maintains the Elial T. Foote and Albion W. Tourgee collections, the Cushing family papers, and John O. Bowman photograph collection. Local history files, including family histories and Civil War documents, are available to those interested in history and genealogy.
